Poem of the Day - 2/20/07

Friendship

Oh, the comfort—
the inexpressible comfort of feeling safe with a person—
having neither to weigh thoughts nor measure words,
but pouring them all right out,
just as they are,
chaff and grain together;
certain that a faithful hand will take and sift them,
keep what is worth keeping,
and then with the breath of kindness blow the rest away.

-Dinah Maria Mulock Craik (1826-1887)

  1. Morning all, just wanted to pop my head in and say howdy and sorry I’ve been so absent lately, I keep coming home and crashing… remnants of the flu. Hoping you all have a fantastic and productive day!

    keep what is worth keeping

    Absolutely true.

  2. Mornin, Spider, blueneck, and all…

    I love that poem and it’s message. I love the line..”the breath of kindness”.
    I love it when a friendship reaches that place where one day, you realize that yes, you DO have another “trusted other” in your life. Someone who knows all about you, and loves you anyway: rough edges included. Someone you know, care for, and accept, unconditionally, just as they are.

    For me, once I feel that, I know I will not be betrayed. Maybe I will be disappointed, maybe even angry at times, if we run into a tangled thread, maybe even left behind, but I will never be “betrayed”. This person will never hug me one day and blow poison darts at me the next. I can relax and just be myself with this person.

    I woke up with a heavier heart than usual this morning, and this poem was just the ticket. Thanks, blueneck, for helping me refocus.
